What do you get with burlesque – an engaging stage show full of comedy skits, dance numbers and striptease – with the performing arts? And why meet these two worlds?

The answer is Friday and Saturday at the Honolulu Museum of Art, when Cherry Cabaret returns to the public with "Bloom: A Floral Fete," Doris' grand two-night celebration after a long hiatus due to the pandemic. Duke's Theater at the Museum.

The exhibit takes its theme from the museum's current exhibit, "Rebecca Lewis Law: Awakening," an immersive installation in two of the museum's galleries that celebrates Hawai'i's deep connection to native and imported flowers. Cherry Blossom Cabaret will join world-class fusion belly dancers of Shakti Dance Movement and aerial performers of Volari Aerial Burlesque to celebrate the beauty of flowers and women.

"This is probably the best and most luxurious show ever," said show producer Violetta Beretta. Beretta is also president of Cherry Blossom Cabaret and producer of the Hawaii Burlesque Festival.

This year added a big pre-show to the off-air schedule.

"Volari will perform on the main lawn of the museum because there is no way to install the antenna (show) inside the theater," said Beretta, adding that the plane was preparing certain show equipment before the show. . "It's a big pyramid-shaped structure in the middle of a valley. So it's going to be great because we're going to have this beautiful preview with all the stuff outside," he said.

"The gallery will be open, as well as the grounds, visitors will be able to walk around and enjoy the grounds, see an aerial burlesque show, enjoy a cocktail and then we'll take it to the actual show in the theatre."

He added that flowers were the theme all along.

"We focus as much as possible on Hawaiian flowers, especially real, native Hawaiian flowers as much as possible, and then we try to personify those different flowers."

Naturally, Beretta will jump. Fans and followers of the band can also look forward to appearances by Madame X, Misfortune, Queen Mabsey, Luna Velor and Bunny Pistols.

Local entertainer Hunter Down and "Queen of Mustaches" Tita Teesling will share hosting duties.

Kale Kaina, founder and artistic director of the Shakti dance movement, took the opportunity to add a deeper cultural element to this visual celebration of the beauty of flowers and the female body.

“(Our group) represents four different types of native flowers. We represent this pua, which is the body shape of the flat kino or haumea, which is Mother Earth," said Kaina, who is currently double majoring in Hawaiian studies and painting at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. In Hawaiian lapau medicine, flowers are used for birthing practices and the feminine. They are everything. is used for… So in one of our essays we would describe Haumea as a flower. Another would be williwili, which is a wild and native type of tree that still exists. Thorns.

Kaina says she draws inspiration from local flowers and their cultural origins.

“I want to use that knowledge in my work, so again in this showcase I'm discussing native plants and the roots (stories) associated with those plants as we bring them to the stage. "
