Jim Jarmusch Hints Next Film Might Have No Music: ‘It Doesnt Really Want It So Far

Jim Jarmusch says his next movie will probably be shot in the fall, but he doesn't even have any music.

"I think the movies that we're going to do later this year might not have music," Jarmusch said at the annual Only Lovers Left panel at the 2023 Overlook Film Festival (via Playlist).

Jarmusch continued, “It's a very subtle film; Very quiet. And I think the music can be very moving towards: It's a funny and sad movie, isn't it? Both are woven. I don't know if I want to add anything else to the music. He really doesn't want that right now."

Director Patterson is known for his selection of soundtracks featuring musicians such as Tom Waits, Screaming Jay Hawkins, Joe Strummer, Jack White and RZA. Jarmusch has directed Iggy Pop's music documentary Gimme Danger, Neil Young's Year of the Horse tour and Cat Power's music video A Pair of Brown Eyes.

Jarmusch's untitled film will be his first film since 2019's The Dead Don't Die. Jarmusch has since directed the short film French Water for Saint Laurent starring Julianne Moore, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Chloe Sevigny, India Moore and Leo Reilly, musician and son of John C. Reilly.

“For me, music is very beautiful and I love cinema because cinema is closely related to music. It moves around you at its own pace," says Jarmusch (via Fars UK). They are very connected. But for me it's music, the biggest inspiration when I'm depressed or something like, "Think of music I've never heard!" I say. So there is only one. Imagine a world without music, man. You say give me a gun?
