Kanye West Stripped Of Honorary Degree, A First For Prestigious Chicago Art School

The Art Institute of Chicago has denied Kanye West an honorary doctorate.

West, now known as Ye, was recognized by the prestigious art school in 2015 for his services to arts and culture.

Kanye West's Twitter account has been suspended after Elon Musk posted a picture of Hokenikaka Nazi.

The university announced its decision Thursday, saying it "condemns and rejects Kanye West's (now known as Ye) anti-African, anti-Semitic, racist and dangerous statements, particularly those directed against the Black and Jewish communities."

"Affirmative action is inconsistent with SAIC's mission and values, and we have revoked the honorary doctorate," SAIC said in a statement.

The decision comes amid growing pressure from a Change.org petition launched by SAIC Against Hate

"This award validates the school and shines a light on a figure who in recent months has repeatedly made public statements expressing and justifying anti-Semitism," the petition reads. "Despite his contributions prior to receiving this award, Yeh continues to use the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, as it is known today, to legitimize hate and violence, which are harmful."

The petition has collected over 4000 signatures.

SAIC's decision to strip West of the honorary degree follows other media, social media and retail brands, including Adidas and Balenciaga, that have cut ties with the rapper and fashion designer.
