A class-action lawsuit filed Monday in Cumberland County Superior Court alleges that the South Portland School Board failed to pay Ed Techs for all hours worked in violation of state wage and hour laws.
The lawsuit was filed on behalf of Ed Tech Tracy Tannoia and other Ed Techs in the area. About 150 technicians work in nine schools in the area.

According to the lawsuit, the district regularly requires Ed Techs to work overtime but discourages them from posting extra work in their programs. The lawsuit says it adds one to two hours each week. Tanoya says he and other Ed Tech employees regularly arrive early for business meetings and often have to stay longer than usual to ensure the safety of all students.
Tanoya has been living in the neighborhood since 2000 and says he has been there since the beginning.
“These technicians are some of the hardest working and lowest paid workers in the area. My client tried to raise the issue with his line manager but was told he didn't want to hear about overtime. My client was told that "this is just part of the job" and that "we do this for students". It is against the law to require your employees to work for free, and this case is a clear violation of the law,” said Peter Mancuso, a Borealis Law attorney in Portland who filed the lawsuit.
