If you're looking to add a child to your gift list this year, you're probably looking for something they'll love that has an educational value.
INDIANAPOLIS – Christmas is coming and many people are doing last minute shopping. If you're looking to add a child to your list this year, you're probably looking for a gift that's both educational and fun. 13Jennifer Brinker, news literacy expert, recommends some gifts to help kids learn.
Matthew Foltz – Notebook: What would you recommend as the best gift to improve your teaching skills?
woman Brinker: Easy, Matthew. Books are the best way. Find out what your child does and how much they read, or a bookstore gift card makes a great gift. I'm a big fan of combining fun activities with it to make reading more fun. You can choose a book with a movie attached and watch the movie after reading it. Tell the story and compare the book with the movie.
Matthew Foltz – Notebook: What about a great educational gift to keep kids busy?
woman Brinker: I thought of LEGO. This thing has been around for a long time, and its popularity is only growing. You can buy kits that come with instructions, or you can buy kits that let kids get creative and create their own creations. I recommend going to crunchlabs.com run by famous YouTuber Mark Rober or kiwico.com and checking out their subscriptions. Around $16 to $25 per month. You can register a child for a monthly subscription. They offer ethnic collections, geography collections, art tools – you name it. They are designed around the age group and needs of children and the gifts will last long after the holidays!
Matthew Foltz – Notebook: If someone wants to save a little money but wants a gift that many children in the family can enjoy, what do you suggest?
woman Brinker: Games are great gifts. People don't always find it educational, but it is! Take games for toddlers like Candy Land – teaches turn taking, coloring and counting. Classic games like Clue help build deductive reasoning skills. Personally, I enjoyed the One Night Werewolf games for the older kids. Improves critical thinking skills and storytelling. There are many things children can take away from family play.
Matthew Fultz-WTHR: Any recent gift ideas?
woman Brinker: Kids learn a lot from this experience, so a family membership at the Indianapolis Zoo or Children's Museum is a great option. Families can enjoy it all year round and I'm sure you'll learn something every time you go!
In truth, scalability is a serious advantage that VPNs have over leased traces.
