Sharmeen Abed-Chinoy will become the first woman and person of color to direct a Star Wars film with a new film in the franchise, and actress Daisy Ridley will return as Rey's character.

Obeid-Chinoy has previously won two Oscars for the documentaries Saving Face (2012) and The Girl in the River: The Price of Forgiveness (2015). She recently starred in two episodes of the Disney+ series Ms. A Miracle".
He will direct from a screenplay by Pican Blinds creator Stephen Knight.
