Zack Snyder Says TV Is ‘Way Riskier Than Movies Now: A Film Version Of ‘Euphoria Would ‘Never Get Made And ‘Cant Exist

Zack Snyder joins Anthony and Joe Russo of the Pizza Film School podcast to talk about HBO's 'Euphoria' and Netflix's 'Squid Game' and how television is becoming more adventurous and exciting in terms of storytelling. Movie. He named two scenes then.

"I think we're in a golden age of television, where television programs are good at showing you something you've never seen before, or informing you, or making a difference that you didn't think was coming." Snyder said (via The Playlist): "They're much more vulnerable."

"I watched the show just like 'Euphoria,' [and] it was amazing," Snyder continued. "This show shouldn't exist; that's great. And things like that… I was watching the show and I was like, 'This movie will never be made. This movie can't exist.'

Joe Russo agreed, saying that the pressure at the box office and the "joy" in some Hollywood films takes all the risk out of the film.

“You can imagine 'Squid Game' coming here as a movie. It can be an artist movie," Snyder continued. "I think that's what you take 'Euphoria' and 'Squid Game' to where you don't know where you're going or what's going to happen. People want to know."

Russo picked up Snyder's thread and agreed, saying, "Why do you think television is now a golden age because it's so distracted from the format? This is 10 hours of content. It's eight hours of content. You get something different. When you kill off a 5-hour character in a 10-hour story, the emotional impact is more on that character than an hour." It's because you spend 5 hours with it, it's different, you invest a lot of time, you invest a lot, if that character disappears, you're sorry for that investment.

The Russo brothers are best known for directing Marvel movies like Avengers: Endgame, but now they're venturing into TV mythology with their upcoming Amazon Prime Video spy series Citadel. Meanwhile, Snyder has hinted at the long story short of Netflix's space opera Rebel Moon , which allowed the streaming director to pay for two movies.

Rebel Moon is scheduled for release on December 22, 2023, while Rebel Moon Part 2 is expected to release in 2024.
